The Colors of Freedom

The Colors of Freedom
by Amy Grace Lam

The blood in my veins bleeds ORANGE,
FIERCE like fire, burning for a justice that frees.

The blood in my veins bleeds WHITE,
ANGRY that you hate, that I remember, and that we never break these chains.

The blood in my veins bleeds BLACK,
SAD, the absence of color that is our plight when we obliterate all that we radiate.

The blood in my veins bleeds RED,
HUMAN like his, like hers, like ours.

The blood in my veins bleeds PURPLE,
HEALING that wounded place inside me, quietly and softly.

The blood in my veins bleeds BLUE,
BELIEVING in the inexhaustible sky full of possibilities.

The blood in my veins bleeds GREEN,
BLOSSOMING a freedom within myself, and for each other.

The blood in my veins bleeds YELLOW,
DAWNING of a new day.

The blood in my veins bleeds all the COLORS of FREEDOM that call out to our shared humanity.
